Our Mission

What is the Gig Worker's Launchpad?

A specialized program designed to help Canadian gig workers transform their experience into sustainable, independent businesses.

Why We Created This

The Gig Worker's Launchpad was born from a critical observation: while gig work provides flexible income, it often traps workers in a cycle of platform dependency with limited growth potential and financial security.

After interviewing hundreds of Canadian gig workers, we discovered that many had the skills, client relationships, and drive to run their own businesses, but lacked the specific knowledge, tools, and support to make the transition.

We created this program to bridge that gap—providing the missing pieces that transform skilled gig workers into successful business owners.

The Gaps We Address

  • Business Knowledge Gap: Most gig workers have industry skills but lack business fundamentals like legal structures, accounting, and operations.
  • Client Acquisition Gap: Moving from platform-provided clients to direct client relationships requires specific strategies and systems.
  • Financial Transition Gap: Managing the financial uncertainty during the transition period requires careful planning and support.
  • Community Gap: Independent business owners need peer support and mentorship from others who understand their specific challenges.

Our Founding Story

The idea for Gig Worker's Launchpad came from our founder Wilton Otto's personal journey as a newcomer to Canada. As he navigated his new life, Wilton worked across multiple gig platforms—driving for rideshare companies, delivering food with DoorDash, and taking on various freelance projects to make ends meet.

Through this experience, Wilton witnessed firsthand how gig workers struggle with long hours away from family, unpredictable income, and limited growth opportunities despite their hard work and valuable skills. He saw talented individuals trapped in a cycle of platform dependency with no clear path toward financial stability or career advancement.

Wilton then embarked on conducting a series of research and interviewing numerous gig workers who shared their experiences of being trapped in the gig economy. They expressed feeling like there was no way they would ever achieve their dreams of starting or running a business despite having valuable skills and direct relationships with customers. Many described working 60+ hour weeks yet still struggling financially, missing important family moments, and feeling a growing sense of burnout without a clear path forward. Deeply moved by these stories that mirrored his own struggles, Wilton became determined to create a solution. He launched the Gig Worker's Launchpad with a mission to provide fellow gig workers with the knowledge, resources, tools, and community support he wished he had when starting out—everything they need to build the businesses of their dreams while reclaiming control of their time, income, and future. His vision is to transform the Canadian gig economy from a trap of platform dependency into a launching pad for thousands of successful small business owners.
